Treating Influenza & Colds

As we head into the last quarter of the year, the so-called “flu and cold season” is upon us. Ensuring we maintain our wellness and supporting our nervous system and immune system is essential. You can easily do this with diet and a few key supplements. And should you become unwell, I’ve put together a protocol to help manage illness as comfortably as possible.

The WHY

The rationale for illness prevention as well as treatment is the same for all bacteria and viruses. It requires (1) removing the source of toxins, (2) strengthening the mucous membranes, (3) clearing the lymphatics of any accumulated protein, viral or bacterial toxins, and, most importantly, (4) maintaining an organic diet that supports this whole process.

Removing the Source

Understand that we do not “catch colds/flu.” The most common source of toxins is from undigested foods hanging out in the intestine, which then produce acidity and toxins. Once absorbed into the lymphatic system, we may start to feel unwell (lethargy, headaches, etc.). Acidity is what makes us more susceptible to pesky pathogens (i.e., things “going around). The illness that inevitably follows is just detox. Enter Daily Defense. I developed Daily Defense specifically to neutralize toxins, clear the lymphatics, and alkalize the intestine and body. Alkalinity is the best defense against illness, and taking one or two of these per day supports wellness year-round.

Strengthen the Mucous Membranes

When the mucous membranes of the throat, nose, and eyes are challenged by acidity, the defense they provide against invaders deteriorates. They are the ‘walls of the fort’ and must maintain alkalinity to be strong. The most common symptom of mucosal acidity is a sore, scratchy throat. Again, Daily Defense helps alkalize the mucosa to reduce irritation. Beta-carotene also reduces inflammation and can be added if cold symptoms persist.

Cleaning the Lymphatics

Once toxins start circulating in the lymphatics, the infection progresses, causing headaches, body aches, difficulty sleeping, sinus and nasal drainage, chills, and fatigue. Clearing the lymphatics requires an enzyme to dissolve viral or bacterial toxins. I have found Serrapetase to be incredibly helpful for reducing/dissolving toxins, along with NewLiv, to remove them from the body.

You Are What You Eat

Want to enjoy vibrant health year-round? Here’s the not-so-secret secret: DIET. The foundation for illness prevention is the food and beverages you consume–it’s as simple as that. You cannot avoid getting sick if you’re constantly eating things that put your system into an acidic, inflamed state. Protecting the mucosal membranes described above means minimizing (or avoiding completely) your intake of fried foods, fast food, conventional flour and grains, sugar, honey, black pepper, all citrus, pineapple, melons, fruit juices, vinegar, tomatoes, salsa, onions, eggplant, nuts, nut butter, seeds, baked meats, soy protein, yogurt, cheese, popcorn, chips, black tea, coffee, soft drinks,  and alcohol. And if you become sick with flu or a cold, you should avoid ALL of those while recuperating.

Cold & Flu Protocol - The Basics

Diet: “Feed a cold—starve a fever.” Avoid all acidic foods; no raw foods should be eaten. Only cooked foods, broths and soups, and herbal teas, with the exception of organic applesauce, sweet apples, and pears.

Daily Defense: Initially, take 4 capsules and then 2  capsules 3 to 4 times a day.

Serrapeptase: Initially, take 3 capsules and the 2 capsules 3 to 4 times a day.

NewLiv: Initially, take 3 capsules and then 2 capsules 3 to 4 times a day.

Cold & Flu Protocol – Advanced Illness

When an illness does not begin improving within 2 to 3 days, then it is necessary to provide additional support with the following nutritional supplements:

Bioflavonoids (Quercitin): strengthens the mucous membranes and promotes healthy mast cell functions, which keeps the infection on the surface. Take 1 to 2 capsules 2 to 3 times a day.

Beta Carotene 25,000IU: strengthens the mucosa, improves the function of  B-lymphocytes, increases the production of and enhances the function of Helper T-Cells, and increases the number of T-Lymphocytes. Initially, take 4 capsules and then 2 capsules twice a day.

L-G-K-S: stimulates the flow of lymphatics, promotes the elimination of lymphatic toxins, and binds with foreign substances to facilitate their removal through the kidneys and liver. Swollen tonsils and lymph nodes, congested ears, dizziness, stiffness, sore muscles upon waking, and generally feeling worse in the AM are indicators for L-G-K-S. Take 2 capsules 1 to 3 times a day.

Electrolyte-2: normalizes hydration when fevers and excess perspiration or frequent urination have occurred. Weakness, headaches, feeling lightheaded, and dry mouth develop. Take 1 capsule 3 times a day.

BioCarb: if there is excess acidity, cracked lips, cold sores, canker sores, red and irritated nasal passages, throat soreness with breathing, sore skin, and difficulty getting comfortable can occur. Take 1-2 capsules 3 times a day.

Throat Spray w/Zinc: These can be taken 4 to 6 times a day to support immunity.

Managing children under the age of 10 during an illness is the same with reduced dosages. Generally, the number of pills or capsules can be reduced to half the adult dose and given in applesauce if the child has difficulty swallowing pills.

Our bodies have the intelligence and the ability to not only cure any illness but also prevent it from ever occurring. The treatments listed can be followed in reduced dosages once a day, along with the correct diet recommendations to maintain a healthy fall and winter.
