About The Gland
Metabolism is the process by which food is converted to energy by the body. The thyroid is the primary endocrine gland that regulates the metabolism of the body. It is located in front of the throat and produces iodine-based thyroid hormones.
Thyroid hormones increase oxygen and sugar availability to the cells, which regulate how fast they can produce energy to perform their functions. As a result, the thyroid is much like the gas pedal in a car, determining how quickly all the body functions will perform.
This gland also enables a healthy appetite, complete digestion, regular hormone cycles, and tolerance to temperature fluctuations.
Physical Symptoms
It’s common to experience one or more of these
- Water retention can be present in the hands, feet, and in the face
- The digestion is slow
- Small amounts of food seem to put on weight
- Weight is gained from the waist down first
- There is an intolerance to cold which causes a chill that is described as “cold bones”
- There may be constipation, lethargy, and abnormal menstrual flow
- The hair can be dry and coarse
Psychological Characteristics
Thyroid energy relates primarily to the mental processes, the ability to intellectualize, to reason, to think something through, to problem solve, and to comprehend. The thyroid also relates to the ability to verbalize and accurately communicate ideas and concepts.
The Tortoise struggles with these things. Life for them goes at a slower pace. Long conversations are overwhelming and hard to follow, so they tend to stay away from them. Often when they are trying to communicate, there can be trouble getting their words across and will often lose their train of thought.
